Lifeguards 10-8

RBP Sand Hole Rescue

Why people have an affinity for digging large holes and tunnels on the beach is anyone’s guess. What lifeguards know is that these holes can be deadly. One hole dug by a bored-adolescent minded adult can be a death trap for a small child. Sand holes dug on America’s beaches have claimed too many lives over the last 50 years, and as the beaches become more crowded, the frequency of these accidents continue to increase.

Join hosts Mike Hudson and Dan Maloney as they discuss this pivotal rescue with former RBP chief lifeguards, Aaron Tartel and Matt Matsco. The boys will dive into the background of Rehoboth Beach Patrol and what it takes to be an RBP lifeguard as well as the operations of this historic patrol and the events that led up to a high acuity, low frequency, one-of-a-kind call that taxed every guard staffing the beach on that July afternoon in Delaware. This is a very unique case review that all lifeguards can learn a little something from.

If you are interested in the newspaper story written about the rescue, see the link below. This linked article includes numerous pictures from the rescue as well as the same audio clip of the radio traffic that we will be reviewing in the podcast.

So, cover down, take off your shoes, kick back and listen to the story of how one patrol came together to save a life under less-than-ideal conditions, under very unique circumstances.
